SEPTEMBER 2009
Dear Georgie GleimRachel

Welcome to the New Gleim the Jeweler!

We have had a busy summer of reinventing our presence in downtown Palo Alto.  We made the painful decision to downsize our store in our longtime location at 322 University Avenue and move two blocks east to 540 University.  At our new location you will see all the services you are used to: jewelry and watch repair, jewelry appraisals, estate jewelry buying and consignment, and private and corporate sales.  The only thing you will not see is showcases full of jewelry.  Our University Avenue and Stanford Shopping Center stores are less than a half mile apart.  We finally decided that it was not making sense to have two fully-stocked stores only five minutes apart from each other.  Our very first location, in 1931, was a small stall near the Stanford Theater, at which we had some merchandise for sale and did watch and jewelry repairs.  So in a sense, we have returned to our roots.  540 University Avenue is our fifth location on the Avenue in nearly 80 years.  After our initial start, we moved across the Avenue to share quarters with a music store in the 200 block of University. We then moved to the middle of the 300 block.  When Woolworth's came to town and took our space, we moved to 322 University, our home for the past 60 years.  And now we have moved again.  We are still setting up our window displays and some final moving-in details, but we are up and functioning for your everyday jewelry servicing needs.  Rick Velayo is now focusing on developing our presence on a variety of Internet sites as an enhancement to our traditional retailing.  And Marie Bayer has her watch bench at the new location, so we can continue to replace your watch batteries and repair your watches as always.  I have relocated my office to our Stanford Shopping Center location. As both my grandfather and father realized, retailing is an ever-changing landscape and we must be able to adapt to the times.  Stop by and say hello at 540 University!

Thank you to the many friends who came to our Store Closing Sale at 322 University Ave.  It was rewarding to hear from so many people that our presence in Palo Alto has mattered to them, and how glad they were to hear we are retaining that downtown presence in our new location.  It was fun to see how many friends found wonderful bargains during the sale and to see so much of our jewelry find good new homes.
Sincerely,

IT'S A THRILL!

Thank You
Gleim the Jeweler has just been named winner of both the County Alamanac Reader's Choice Award and the Palo Alto Weekly's Best of Palo Alto poll! This is the first year we have regained eligibility for the Best of Palo Alto poll, since three years ago we were named Hall of Fame winners, and it's the first time we have won the County Almanac's poll. It's a thrill to know that we have earned the confidence of so many of our local clients. Thank you!
September Birthstone

September Birthstone - Sapphire
Sapphire, the September birthstone, has been popular since the Middle Ages and, according to folklore, will protect your loved ones from envy and harm. Medieval clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings. Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or violetish blue, as well as various shades of pure blue. The most prized colors are a medium to medium dark blue or slightly violetish blue. Sapphire is a variety of the gem species corundum and occurs in all colors of the rainbow. Pink, purple, green, orange, or yellow corundum are known by their color (pink sapphire, green sapphire). Ruby is the red variety of corundum.
Estate Jewelry Stories

Once in a while we run across a piece of estate jewelry which clearly has its own very special story.  These photos show such a piece.  It was an English gold coin, whose reverse side had been polished away so it could be engraved and worn on a bracelet.  I was intrigued by the initials "QAIMNSR," and turned to our favorite source, Google, to see what they stood for.  Here is what I found: "Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve."  Now this simple gold coin tells a completely different story, of a brave young woman's wartime service in France.  The loop at the top is nearly worn through, telling us that this was a cherished charm which saw a lifetime of wear.  What a wonderful story this tells!

Jewelry Stories

I recently hosted a reunion for my high school graduation class.  One of the women there, a friend since grade school, made certain to wear the silver charm bracelet my family had given her when we were in Girl Scouts together.  This bracelet, by now nearly 50 years old, carries special memories of childhood and can evoke that period simply by looking at it.  Most of us have a piece of jewelry similar to this, one which can tell stories about our lives, bringing back memories of friends and family and keeping us connected to our own history.  This is one of the most important reasons for giving jewelry.  Every piece of jewelry tells a story. That story might be one of when it was presented, or who presented it, or for what achievement you rewarded yourself.

The other day I spoke to a colleague in my Rotary Club about his own jewelry stories.  He told me that the reason he came to our store to buy his fiancĂ©e's engagement ring is that same kind of long-ago connection.  When he was in junior high, he came to our store to buy his then-girlfriend a sterling St. Christopher medallion.  (Remember those?)  It's always flattering to know that we maintain such emotional connections with our clients over the years.
