November 2008

Did you know that the world's largest carved emerald is right here in your own backyard?

Gleim the Jeweler has owned this unique piece for over 20 years. It is a 38-pound, 86,000 carat emerald crystal, carved with an Asian mountain theme reminiscent of jade carvings. We purchased it in partnership with a local gem dealer, who found out about it in Brazil. He then took it to Hong Kong to have it carved, where 4 gem carvers worked for a year to turn what was a rather homely and massive item into a beautiful work of art.

There are over two dozen individual figures carved into the emerald, along with several houses, a waterfall and river, and numerous animals. It is always on display at our University Ave store; drop by to have a look!

    November Birthstones: Topaz & Citrine

Two gems are appropriate for November birthdays - Topaz and Citrine.

Topaz is a gemstone available in a rich rainbow of colors. Prized for several thousand years in antiquity, all yellow gems in antiquity were called topaz. Often confused with citrine quartz (yellow) and smoky quartz (brown), quartz and topaz are separate and unrelated mineral species. The most prized color of topaz is called Imperial topaz after the Russian Czars of the 1800s and features a magnificent orange body color with pinkish undertones. Topaz also comes in yellow, pink, purple, orange, and the many popular blue tones.

Citrine, the other birthstone for November is known as the "healing quartz". This golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health while encouraging and guiding hope, energy and warmth within the wearer. Citrine can be found in a variety of shades ranging from pastel yellow to dark brownish orange. It is one of the most affordable of gemstones and plentiful in nature. Citrine is found most frequently in Brazil, Bolivia, and Spain.

    Jewelry Always Has a Story
    Harper's Bazaar

Gleim the Jeweler has had the opportunity to work on two very special charm bracelets. One of our clients has set herself the goal of running a marathon in every state of the union. Upon completion, she finds a silver charm related to that state. She already has about twenty charms, and what a sense of accomplishment she must feel as she sees her collection grow!

Another athletic client has been participating in Iron Man competitions, and we have made a special charm to commemorate each event. She has several for the half-Iron Man races, and just completed her first full Iron Man, adding another charm.

Each of these bracelets tells a unique story, and each will bring a special legacy to their owners' children and grandchildren. (Let alone allowing them to bask in their accomplishments when friends ask about their bracelets.) See what unique stories you have in your life which might be told with a charm collection.
