Dear Jewelry Lover,
On a Wednesday morning, seventy five years
ago, Frederick Gleim opened his jewelry stall for
business on University Ave. in downtown Palo Alto.
Laid off from his job as a watchmaker, unable to find
another, he borrowed a few hundred dollars from a
friend and bought the inventory from a bankrupt
jewelry store. He must have felt his skills as a
watchmaker, jeweler and engraver, as well as his
common sense, would make a success. At the end
of that first day, the big “0” in the sales side of the
ledger must have been somewhat discouraging, but
by the second day he was able to record receipts of
$5.00 And on April 2 he took in his first watch
repair, replacing a mainspring for Mrs. Dana Smith, at
a then-expensive charge of $3.00 Mrs. Smith
proved to be a satisfied customer; she came in again
on April 8 with another watch needing repair; this
time a crown was replaced for $1.00
Paging through our original watch repair book gives
some other interesting items. Although most
watches were recorded by name, sometimes the
notation was simply “girl at University Creamery,”
or “Barber at Vic’s,” or “Catholic Priest,”
or “Studebaker Garage.” There are some very
recognizable names: Mr. Werry, of Werry Electric,
first appeared in our book in 1931. Hod Ray, longtime
Paly High coach, brought in more than one watch or
stopwatch for repair. Gleim’s did many clocks and
watches for folks at the Vet’s Hospital.
Our company has come a long way since then,
attaining successes Frederick Gleim would have been
hard-put to imagine. We have expanded our
locations, expanded our inventory, and earned a
national reputation within the jewelry industry.
None of this would have happened without the
support and loyalty of our local customers,
starting from those very first clients who took a
chance on a small shop opened in the middle of the
Depression.

Fundraisers
Gleim the Jeweler recently participated in
fundraisers for two well-regarded local schools.
Pinewood School, in Los Altos Hills, recently held its
annual fundraiser, and one guest was the lucky
winner of some diamond earrings which we donated.
And at Castilleja School’s event, we donated a
diamond for the “Diamond Drop.” For the third year
in a row, the diamond was won by a Castilleja staff
member! Must have something to do with good
karma from the outstanding education provided the
students there.
Westwind Community Barn
We will also be participating in the Kentucky
Derby
Day Event in support of Westwind Community Barn in
Los Altos Hills. This historic barn has been part of
the landscape since the 1940s, and is still an
important part of the community. Gleim’s also has a
personal connection; I kept my own horses there in
the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, so it’s a group I am
happy to support.
Filoli Center
Filoli, the extraordinary historic garden estate we are
lucky enough to have in our backyard in Woodside,
will be having a special celebration at its annual
Mothers’ Day Flower Show. This year marks the 30th
anniversary of Filoli Center. The Opening Night
Preview Party will be honoring the Past Presidents of
Friends of Filoli. I am pleased we can participate in
this event by supplying jewelry for these Past
Presidents to wear during the evening. You can find
out more about the event at www.filoli.org.

Save The Date!! Come help celebrate an honor for Gleim the Jeweler! |

Gleim the Jeweler is honored to be one of only seven
jewelers in the country to host a Cartier Premier
Event in 2006.
May 5-7, our store at the Stanford Shopping Center
will have the privilege of showing a special collection
of more than twenty jeweled watches with a total
value of over $750,000. This will be a rare
opportunity to see some extraordinary pieces from
the House of Cartier which will exemplify their long
tradition of creating timepieces of exquisite quality.
Our Cartier expert will be on hand to tell you about
the proud tradition of the company, known
particularly for its extraordinary jewelry, watches and
clocks created during the Art Deco period. Cartier
was a favorite of both European Royalty and
American society, and an item from Cartier often
became the centerpiece of a personal collection to
be handed down to succeeding generations.
One of our own clients of many years ago had a
favorite anecdote about Cartier: she knew she
had “arrived” when she entered Cartier New York and
her own personal salesperson left the Duchess of
Windsor to come over and say hello to her!
Please note; Cartier images are similar to
items from the collection, but not necessarily the
exact items which will be appearing.
