Dear Jewelry Lover,

Welcome to our second edition of Jewelry News. Many of you sent some nice comments after receiving the first edition, for which I thank you. I hope this newsletter will be an opportunity for you to learn a bit about jewelry and gemstones, enabling you to make better decisions about your own jewelry purchases and enhancing your appreciation of some of the pieces you already own.

Here at Gleim the Jeweler we are catching our breath after a busy Christmas season during which we wrapped many of our signature gold boxes to send into their new homes. I have had the pleasure of hearing directly from a number of happy recipients who have come in to show off their new bracelet, ring, watch, or necklace. All of us here have heartfelt thanks for you, our clients, who give us the compliment and the confidence to allow us to help you with these personal and sometimes emotional gift-giving occasions.

By the way, be sure to read to the end of this newsletter to find out about the free gift available for subscribers!

Coming Attractions - Valentine's Day

Valentines Image

Yes, everyone’s favorite romantic gift-giving occasion is approaching. What a wonderful day, celebrating nothing but love and sentiment! We have a great selection of hearts in diamonds, gold and platinum in each of our stores, as well as many other kinds of jewelry to help the romance along. Imagine giving her a platinum heart locket engraved with her monogram, which she will wear for years and someday give to your daughter to carry on the family history. Or a heart-shaped ruby surrounded with diamonds. Or that most romantic of all gifts, a diamond engagement ring.

We also have a wide selection of gifts for under $100, as Valentine’s Day is one day on which I often see children coming in with several weeks allowance to find something special for Mom. Perhaps that something special is a real rose, plated in 24K gold. Or another charm for her charm bracelet. Whatever you choose, the fact that you took the time to plan ahead and chose something just for her will make this a very special day for her.

150 Years of Knowledge

I took a look at the tenure of our 18 professional associates, and realize that they have an accumulation of over 150 years of experience with our company alone! And most of them had some jewelry experience before they joined Gleim the Jeweler.

What does this mean for you? Beyond having a comprehensive knowledge of jewelry, gemstones and watches, they know our own company’s capabilities very well. They know which one of our craftsmen to use for your jewelry or watch repair; they know just which one of our diamond cutters to call to track down that special diamond for you; they know how to use our industry reputation and contacts to find the unique and unusual. Most important, they know how to answer all your questions and help you make a decision on a purchase with which you will be completely comfortable.

FAQs

Thinking Lady
In this section each month I will try to address some of the questions we are asked most frequently. I thought I’d start with one of the thoughts foremost in people’s minds when they leave a diamond ring to be repaired:

  • Q: How do I know I will get MY diamond back when I pick my ring up?
  • A: Although many clients are uncomfortable asking this question, it is often on someone’s mind when they begin a relationship with any jeweler. After all, when you leave your car to be repaired you know you will be able to tell whether it is yours. But your diamond? You just aren’t sure you will be able to tell one diamond from another, and all you want is reassurance that you will be able to recognize it. I am always happy to allow you to examine your diamond under magnification, using our gem microscope, when you leave it with me; I will even draw you a picture of the identifying inclusions found inside your stone. This way you have something to compare your diamond to when you pick it up. Beyond this practical solution, however, I can assure you that any ethical jewelry store values its reputation too highly to do anything that would endanger our clients’ confidence in our company. We have nearly 75 years of history in Palo Alto, and 25 years in Los Altos. That’s far too precious a legacy to jeopardize.

Great Gift Idea!

Cameo
Did you know you can have a custom portrait cameo created from your own photograph? Here is an example of a cameo of a favorite pet; you can see the wonderful likeness. These are created by craftsman in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, gemstone carving center of the world. Imagine the heirloom you can create with a portrait of your child, your grandmother, or your spouse. The cameo may be set in a custom frame, and you have your own family heirloom for generations to come.

Wish List

Wish List
During your holiday shopping, did you find yourself casting around for ideas of what to buy for that special someone, hoping that your choice would be well-received and that it would fit into an existing jewelry wardrobe?

Here’s how to remove some of the stress of that decision-making. Ask about our Wish List! We keep a wish list in each of our locations in which we keep notes about jewelry items which she/he has looked at and admired. When the next gift-giving occasion comes along (and remember Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!) come in to consult that list. Decision-making made easy! Now you can be sure that whatever you select is something she/he will love.

R&R For Jewelry

Clean Rings
Did you ever stop to think that your jewelry needs regular maintenance checks? Take your rings, for instance, especially those you wear every day. Think about how much you use your hands, and how many times you hear your ring strike some hard surface. All the suitcases you might pick up, all the boxes and bags you carry in and out of your car, all the times you put out the trash can or lift something heavier than you really should. If you’re like me, you are wearing your rings all the time through all these different chores and activities. Over time, the prongs holding the diamonds or other gems in your rings wear down and need to be reinforced. I always suggest you allow us to check the security of the settings on your rings at least once a year, (which we do for no charge) so we can let you know when that repair is needed. (We’ll also clean your rings at the same time we check them.) The cost of any necessary repairs is a small price to pay for the peace of mind it will bring.

"You're Not Wearing It!"

Many people have jewelry they have inherited from a family member. This jewelry often has important sentimental connections for our clients, but is not of a design which fits easily into today’s lifestyle. Often, these pieces can be redesigned in a way which keeps the integrity of the original item but makes it much more wearable today.

Here you see such an example. Our client had a beautiful platinum and diamond bar pin which her grandmother presented to her years ago. In all that time, this pin had never been worn. We were able to have it set into a custom bangle bracelet, which keeps the distinctive original design but makes it much more wearable on an everyday basis. Every time our client wears this bracelet now, she thinks of her grandmother, and surely her grandmother would be pleased to know that her gift is being worn and enjoyed so often. .

There are many times we can help you find ways to enjoy the jewelry now hidden in your safe deposit box; bring it in to let us have a look.

Do you have any gem-set jewelry which you have not worn in a long time? Do you have a ring you inherited from a grandmother which has a beautiful diamond but is just not a design you like? Consider having a custom design created.

The sapphire you see in this picture was originally in an elaborate diamond pin. Our client worked with our custom jeweler to create a ring design for the sapphire; here you see the original sketch as well as the completed ring.

Give your gems a new lease on life by giving them a complete new look.
