Gleim the Jeweler recently partnered with Breitling Watches in support of the Packard Cup Golf Tournament at the Stanford Golf Course. The tournament raises significant funds for the Robert Packard Foundation for ALS Research. We were thrilled to showcase a collection of Bentley watches by Breitling, to accompany the Bentley automobile on display. One lucky winner received a Breitling Colt Chronometer, and surely has the only watch box in existence autographed by Tom Watson, who lends his support to this tournament every year.

The Romance of Estate Jewelry

You will notice that, in December, we are featuring a collection of magnificent estate jewelry. This is an area that has been important to our company from its very earliest days, and to me is one of the most intriguing areas of our jewelry collection. The term "estate" jewelry is a very broad term which can cover anything from jewelry that is centuries old to only a few years old; the common theme is that it is previously owned. The older pieces can more properly be called "vintage" jewelry, which is jewelry that can be identified fairly closely to a particular time.

Art Nouveau jewelry, for instance, was produced around the turn of the last century, Victorian jewelry covers the very lengthy period of Queen Victoria's reign, and Art Deco covers the 1920's and early 30's. It typically represents a very good value, as most estate jewelry will sell for less than its brand-new counterpart.

One of the things I like best about estate jewelry is speculating about its previous life: who owned it? Was it a gift commemorating an anniversary or the birth of a child? Was it an engagement gift? What parties has it seen, and was it worn to any significant historic events? Most of the time we will never know the story behind an individual piece of jewelry, but every single item has its own history.

Every piece represents a gift to a loved one, and to me this knowledge gives a richer appeal to that piece of jewelry. It doesn't have to be expensive to have that emotional appeal. On my father's keychain is a gold disc engraved with several dates: the date he and my mother met, their first date, the date they became engaged, their wedding day, and the birthdate of their first child. This simple item contains very personal family history which encompasses a wealth of memories and emotions.

Our estate collections in each one of our stores encompass a complete range of periods, from early Victorian to just a few years old, and is always changing as we can never predict what someone will bring through the door. Stop by to see what "new" old pieces we have!
