The American Gem Society was founded in 1934 by Robert M. Shipley, Sr.,
who also founded the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Its purpose is to
serve the public through on-going education of its members, emphasis on
customer service, and through the promotion of high ethical standards in the
jewelry industry.
Requirements for a firm's admission into the Society include a solid
reputation within their community for high ethical standards and the maintaince on their staff of at least one AGS titleholder.
Titleholders are AGS Registered Jewelers (RJ's), Certified Gemologists (CG's), or Certified Gemologist Appraisers (CGA's) - the Society's most advanced title. All
titleholders are re-tested annually on new developments in the fields of
jewelry arts and gemology. CGA's are also re-tested
on new developments in appraisal standards and techniques.
Gleim Jewelers has been actively involved in
the AGS for decades. Both Arthur Gleim and his
daughter, Georgie Gleim, have
served the Society in the capacities of President and Board member.
